@ movers: These days, there are a lot of people looking for very few jobs in *every* discipline - not just consulting.

I think it's important to remember that in the current job market and economic climate, personal branding and honing in on your unique value proposition as an employee, small business owner, consultant - *whatever* is critical to gaining a competitive advantage. If you don't know what makes you special and unique, you're just another one of the hoards looking to scratch out an income.

If you are a true expert in your field you can make a lot of money with consulting. You do have to compete with a lot of low quality consultants. So to really get work you have to sell your skills effectively.

Providing quality consultant services comes down to trust. It's important to be realistic with the companies you're trying to help, and to help them understand the changes they need to make...rather than just tell them. Ultimately, a consultant should be able to work as an extension of a company rather than a freelancer. When a company hires you as a consultant, they're trusting in your abilities, which is all the more reason a consultant, new or veteran, should represent themselves as genuinely as possible.

Great advice, though it's pretty difficult to find a field where there is demand and not a lot of other people looking for work. Chances are, if there is demand for this type of consultant there are people looking for work in that field.
