Know Yourself to Brand Yourself

While I’m still getting to know the readers here at Small Business Branding I have a good hunch that most of you do run small businesses from home.

The internet makes it amazingly easy to run a business as a solopreneur. With an internet you can have all the tools you need to rival a real ‘brick and mortar business’ with a tiny fraction of the cost.

Tools like:

– A Storefront (Website)

– Merchant Processing (Paypal)

– Shopping Carts

– Products (Virtual or Physical)

– Staff (Virtual Assistants)

All the tools in the world won’t make you a successful business if you don’t know WHO YOU ARE and WHAT YOU WANT.

I like to write about what I know, so this topic is very familiar to me. You see I spent many years being a ‘people pleaser’. I made life decisions based on who others told me who I should be and not based on the person I was. Bad, bad move.

What does this have to do with business, especially small business? E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G!

Knowing who you are and what you really want allows you to do everything better in business. It also allows you to be truly unique since you are the only person that ever was and ever will be uniquely you.

Knowing Yourself Allows You to Brand Yourself

When you create a brand that fits you it becomes so much easier to:

  • Write from the heart
  • Make long term decisions
  • Surround yourself with people who get you
  • Attract customers and clients who are a perfect fit

It’s all well and good for me to tell you to ‘know yourself’ but how do you do that? How do you say to yourself “So, who are you?”. Sometimes it’s hard to face but I tell you from experience once you do your business will get easier and you’ll love it more every day.

I really believe the state of ones current business is 100% a reflection of their personal development. If you need to do more work then you’re business will show it in many ways.

Maybe you’re struggling to make it work at all and getting cash flow positive. Maybe you’re working with all the wrong clients and wondering how you attract them like a magnet. Or maybe you jump from one business to another without ever making anything really work.

How To Work on Personal Development For Business

There are many ways you can get reacquainted with you. Choose what works for you. Here are some ideas:

– Take Courses.

– Read Books.

– Do Yoga.

– Meditate.

– Meet People, Have Fun!

– Take Tests.

– Ask Others.

– Read Market From The Heart. (I wrote this 😉 )

Whatever you do know this: A successful business is not just for the priviledged. Never give up, know your goals, know yourself, create your brand and go for it like never before.

Practical Guide to Creating an Information Product

Too many people slow themselves down in business by making projects larger than they need to be. Creating an information product is a prime example.

How long have you wanted to create an info product? Have you been waiting for the ‘right time’? Have you been putting off writing it until you have more experience? Do you feel it won’t be good enough unless it’s 100 pages or a huge package?

Well if you said yes to any of the above, you’re putting up barriers to your own success!

The bottom line is you have experience that people are willing to pay for.

Now let’s go over a practical guide to creating your first information product, step by step:

Step 1 – Define Your Target Market

This is an important step. Know exactly who you’re talking to and what their needs are. This will require market research if you’re not already fully immersed in the market. It may be that you are already working in a specific market and they’ve clearly expressed a need to you – that works too. Many people ARE their target market. Being part of your target market gives you an even better understanding of the needs and issues faced by that market, giving you a competitive edge when creating your products.

Step 2 – Create Your Product

Don’t get stuck in the perpetual mode of creating perfection. Nothing is perfect. Get your product created and move with it. You can always tweak after you release it and improve based on customer feedback.

Step 3 – Create Your Salespage

You’ll need to tell people about your product and why they should buy it. This can be an intimidating step for many people as they feel they are not good at writing to sell. The thing to remember here is your target market. Convince them that your product will help by providing clear descriptions along with examples and customer feedback where appropriate. A salespage doesn’t have to be a huge piece of writing, it only needs to be as long as it takes to give your potential customers all the information they need to make a buying decision.

Step 4 – Set up Payment & Delivery

You need to get people’s money for your product. Setting up payment is another challenge for some. Start off simple with Paypal or a simple shopping cart system. It’s a learn as you go process. Again, don’t expect to get it perfect the first time and just get something set up. Take payments, watch the process, tweak and make it better.

Step 5 – Promoting Your Product

Now you’ve got everything set up and you’re ready for tons of sales. Don’t forget about the promotions! Here are some of the most popular ways to get information product sales:

  • Partnerships with your niche influencers.
  • Pay per click marketing.
  • Email marketing.
  • Blogging.
  • Social Media.

Now you might be thinking you don’t know how to set up paypal, or a shopping cart, or make a pdf. I’m going to tell you something here you don’t often hear from people teaching you stuff –> Google it.

If there’s something you don’t know how to do I promise you that you CAN figure it out. I learned about 90% of what I know about online marketing through trial and error because it’s just the easiest way to learn. Don’t let the excuse “I don’t know how to do it.” stop you – ok?

Many of the marketing methods require that you already have a following. Without a market to bring your message to you shouldn’t expect your product to be an overnight success.

No matter where you’re starting from creating your information product is a real step towards creating passive income. Before you know it you’ll be getting emails saying ‘you’ve made a sale!’

How Using Audio Builds Trust in Your Brand

When I think of the businesses I am most loyal to online there is always more than just the written word involved. Sure, wonderful copy can build relationships with your customers and readers but there is nothing like the sound of your voice.

You may have heard before that you are the only thing that is 100% percent unique about your business. You may have also heard that a very small portion of our communication comes from the words we say. The rest comes from our voice inflection, tone, level and our body movements.

Now if you are using audio to connect with your audience then obviously they won’t see your body movement. If you are really ambitious you can go for video and give them the full package of ‘you’.

Even if you do audio, you are bringing so much more to the table than just your words.

Why does it matter?

The internet is a new medium for sales. It’s not the same as offline where people would come face to face with a salesman and can make decisions based on intuition and instinct, very powerful human resources. Now there is a lot more mistrust because it is so easy to deceive with the written word. Potential customers almost always only buy from those they know, like and trust.

How do you get them to trust you?

Let them get to know you. Now I’m not suggesting you start recording audio clips of what you had for breakfast or how well your kids are doing in school. However, you can use audio to greatly enhance your sales message and communications with potential customers.

How to Build Trust Using Audio on Your Website

Here are just a few ways you can use audio to boost your brand and connect with your audience:

1. Provide instructions on how to use your products or services – Many times people need more information. You can provide this information through audio and let your potential customers know what the practical uses of your product, service or even your website is.

2. Interview Experts – Providing great interviews of experts in your field is a fantastic way to build trust. You become an expert yourself for learning from so many people who know a great deal about your topic. You also become a trusted source of information.

3. Welcome & Thank You Messages – When someone walks into your house you greet them and say ‘hi’, right? You can do the same thing with audio on your website and in your salespages. Welcome them to your website with a useful message and a call to action. Thank them for signing up to your email newsletter. There are so many things you can do here with short, three to five minute audios that grab your visitors attention.

4. Provide Testimonials – Maybe you want to interview someone who’s used your product or maybe you can just have them record an audio for you. You certainly will gain more trust by having real, human proof that you know what you’re doing. I’ve done this on my own testimonials page and it’s often impressed the reader enough to enquire about my services.

5. Provide Audio Versions of Pages and Articles – How about providing an audio version of your website page or a great article you’ve written. Allowing different formats for the same content isn’t repetitive, it allows your readers to choose their favorite form for consumption and they’ll appreciate you for that!

6. Create and Record Teleseminars – A very common use of audio is to record teleseminars. A teleseminar is a conference call that provides useful information to your audience through a mult-user line (often 100 or more people can attend). The problem with telesemiars is that they will never fit into everyone’s schedule. The solution is to record it and then send it out to those interested. You can also add it to your website to provide value for a long time to come.

I could go on and on here about the ways you can use audio to build trust, build your brand and build your business. I think you get the picture and I’m sure you can come up with some creative ideas yourself.

Now you might be wondering how hard it is to do this. Won’t you require an expensive expert or some high level of knowledge to record, host and play audio for your audience? No – not at all!

There are a few ways you can record and add audio to your website but my absolute favorite for it’s simplicity is a program called Audio Acrobat. You can use Audio Acrobat to record, host and playback your audios. It can be as simple as calling into a phone number, creating your recording, logging in to get your code and adding that to your website. There are also a multitude of features that make it a very powerful (yet easy to use) program.
