I invited  Ed Roach to be a guest here at the podcast to discuss all things branding. I had some very specific questions that I thought would really help you if with your branding efforts.

We discussed many things and to start I wanted to know what was the ONE thing we needed to remember about branding  — plus we talk about branding mistakes people make and you get to listen in when Ed answers my question about what he thinks is the “brand” here at Small Business Branding.

I think it will surprise you to know that branding is all about perception, what people think of YOU and your company.

Questions Asked On The Call:

1) What are the biggest mistakes you see people making with their branding efforts?

2) What is ONE thing we all should remember about branding?

3) What are the key aspects of branding?

4) How would you explain your brand at The Branding Experts? how would you explain my brand at Small Business Branding?

5) Truly what is the importance of a brand?

6) Why do you think people have a hard getting the fact that they need to brand?

7) any last thoughts?

Here is Ed’s Bio:

For 25 years or so I have developed positioning strategies for small businesses that helps to differentiate them. I appreciate working with companies who see the value of going beyond mere slogans and have a desire to sell from compelling positions. Opportunities come to light in every discussion. I consult predominantly with small business and and implement the solutions developed. I’ve had the pleasure of being interviewed in all media regarding branding small business, most recently in “America’s Best” magazine and the “Christian Radio & Music Industry” trade magazine. I am available for speaking engagements and I have authored “The Reluctant Salesperson“, an Introvert’s Guide to Selling. Kelly McCausey is one cool person!

She went from mega debt as a single mom, working full time outside the home to a wildly successful online business owner. Kelly is also one of THE people who helped me go from offline business owner (MISERABLE) to online success (SUPER HAPPY).

She’s down to earth and is happy to share her insights into the Work At Home Mom Community.

I first met Kelly when she launched Mom Masterminds with Alice Seba. That is the place that my life changed forever.

You can read my review of Mom Masterminds here.

——————–

In her own words…

I never had enough money.  I was always struggling to cover a utility bill and when I did get some sort of windfall it usually went to fix my old car or take care of a crisis.  It was two steps forward, three steps back.

I remember one year where I was really starting to get my head above water and a serious wind storm pushed three big trees over – enough to put my home in danger but not far enough to make them touch the house.  That meant they had to be taken down but my homeowners insurance wouldn’t pay.  It was awful to hand over a thousand dollars of my hard earned money to the tree service company.

At that point, I think I sunk into an attitude that nothing would ever change for me. I would always be in debt and never be able to do the things I wanted to. But that wasn’t true.

In 2002 I started to look for ways to make money at home.  I launched a desktop publishing business and created my own website to market it.  This opened a door that led to a whole new world for me and six years later, my life is completely changed.”

——————–

I will never forget all the help, time and support Kelly has given me. She has been a huge blessing in my life and I’m very proud to share her with you here.  I literally had 5 retail store locations and sold it all off for my internet business and my super happy new lifestyle.

Can Written Content Increase Your Customer Base?

With the increase and popularity of audio and video use on the internet, some might think that the written word is becoming a thing of the past. Is the “Content Is King” mantra dead?

NO! Written content is still just as important to your business as ever. Search engines currently do not have a way to “see” the audio or video files, thus making your written words very important.

Today I’m sharing an interview with one of my friends and clients, Regina Baker, owner of WAHMCart.com. Regina is a client at Get Content Results and shares her experiences with hiring writers on her own, why some people are afraid of hiring ghostwriters, and why she credits Get Content Results with increasing the number of customers using her ecommerce services.

Enjoy!

Outsourcing to Grow Your Business

Around March of 2008, Alice Seba invited me to discuss outsourcing with her. At that time I was using her outsourcing services, above is the recording of the interview.

During the interview we discussed some of the challenges of working with assistants. We talked about when I wasn’t planning projects out very well and one of my downfalls were not placing a deadline for a project this can hamper the success of your outsourcing experience.

We also discussed how my planning has changed. It is important to plan ahead so you know what tasks should be outsourced for the month. By outsourcing these tasks, it provides you with the time for long range planning of your business allowing you to grow not only your business but also your income.

My planning takes place the old-fashioned way with pen and paper away from the computer, jotting down notes in my notebook. Avoiding the distraction of the computer helps me to focus on my needs and to plan accordingly.

Listen to the audio interview to find out how you can successfully outsource to grow your business. Coming up next I’ll share with you how I’ve turned my business on it’s head and shaken it up a bit.

Choose Your Words Carefully

By Drew McLellan On October 2, 2008 23 Comments

Once or twice a week, I walk into my neighborhood dry cleaners with an armful of shirts. As the clerk (and it doesn’t matter which one) approaches the counter, they hopefully ask “just dropping off?”

And I always reply, “Nope, I need to pick up as well.”

Then, as if it was a choreographed part of their business, they take in a little breath and turn back to walk to the computer, to look up my order number. I’m pretty sure they’re completely unaware that they do it. Or that it is so embedded in the culture of the company that they ALL do it.

But they message they transmit is “it’s kind of a pain to have to get your stuff for you. I wish you were just dropping off.”

I never leave feeling as though they appreciate my business. I leave feeling bad that I inconvenienced them.

Imagine how different it would feel if they approached the counter with a “do you have an order to pick up too?”

Tiny tweak. Major difference.

Are you sure you’re transmitting the message you want your customers to receive? Are you sure there’s nothing in your company’s culture/customer interaction that could use a tiny tweak?

Having Fun SBB Podcast Is In The Works!

By Vera Raposo On June 8, 2008 4 Comments

There are many things happening behind the scenes here at Small Business Branding. The main topic on my mind over this weekend is choosing the music for the new podcast.

Small Business Branding Podcast

I’m very funny with these things, I can churn things out pretty darn quick (you can just ask Ed ;-) ) but the one thing I always sit and ponder over is the BEST picture to portray my thoughts for an article, and the BEST music for our new podcast.

I’ve been over at www.musicbakery.com all week trying to find the most suitable music for the new show. If you’re looking to start a podcast for your business, this is a great place to get some music.

So far here are the ones that I like:

progress express
the leaders
effortless mastery
shared vision
corporate progress

I’d love to hear YOUR feedback because I have a feeling my brain may turn to mush on this one. ;-)
